Sinhala & Malabar Villages of Jaffanapatnam in 1695
This is an amazing map, that is found at the Beeldbank National Archives, the Netherlands. We were astonished to see that more than 85% off all villages in Yapanaya or Jaffanapatnam in the early Dutch era, were in fact Sinhala. More so shocking, when today, not a single Sinhala family lives in the North!

        - Collection / Archief-Kaartcollectie Buitenland Leupe
- Description-Kaart van Jaffanapatnam en onderhoorige landen en eilanden.
- Date 1695.
- Opmerkingen-Atlas Amsterdam van Isaac de Graaff.
We have done our utmost to work out where necessary the Dutch written words but obviously we can manage so much. There are some with question marks, that were very difficult to workout. If anyone manages to work out, what they are. Please inform us!
We have written the Sinhala form of the words, as they are found on this map e.g. Anacotte-Anakotte, Cottiewatte-Kotiwatta & Malwatte-Malwatta. We have left the Malabar names intact. The ones that cannot be worked out bare question marks next to them.

Today Waligama, Warmoraetchie, Tinmeraetchie & the Islands, come under Jaffna district. While Patchiela, is now apart of what is called Kilinochchi district.
*Dive or Diva is Sinhala for Island. Today, all these Islands are Tamilized as Tivu.
+Today their is an entire distirct named 'Mullativu' after the port, called Moeletive. 18th Century Dutch sources give this area, the district name of Kariattemoele, which in fact sounds more Sinhala than Tamil.
It must said that, it is very unfortunate that becuase of the change in policy of the Dutch due to the unpleasent situation with Kandy. The deliberate use of Tamil names after the 1700's is fully seen. Although, Sihala place names were still to be seen in early British rule.
